Bexar County DA’s Office employee shot, killed in suspected murder-suicide

2 people died on Sunday in east Bexar County

BEXAR COUNTY, Texas – The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspected murder-suicide with a connection to the Bexar County District Attorney’s Office.

BCSO confirmed the suspected murder-suicide happened Sunday in east Bexar County, but the office had been tight-lipped about additional details until Tuesday.

Here’s what we know right now:

  • Deputies first responded to a home on Sunset Bend around 7:45 p.m. Sunday
  • BCSO found a woman and a man dead inside, and both were shot in the head
  • Investigators determined they were dating
  • Deputies found a 9mm handgun next to their bodies

The Bexar County DA’s Office released a statement to KSAT on Monday. In the statement, the DA’s office said an employee named Jennifer Rodriguez, 37, died tragically over the weekend.

Later Monday, BCSO would not confirm the name of the female victim connected to the case, but a sheriff’s office spokesperson on Tuesday confirmed that Rodriguez was the woman who died at the home.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed to KSAT that Rodriguez was killed Sunday evening after she was shot in the head.

The sheriff’s office identified the man and suspected shooter in this case on Monday as Marcus James, 39. The medical examiner’s office ruled James’ death a suicide.

Both James’ and Rodriguez’s time of death was 7:56 p.m. Sunday, according to the medical examiner’s office.

According to a sheriff’s office spokesperson, four 911 calls were placed at the residence between March 2025 and August 2025.

None of those 911 calls, the spokesperson said, involved James.

Officials said BCSO’s Homicide Unit is still working to determine “the specific roles of each individual” in this case as well as determining whether there were any other offenses between James and Rodriguez leading up to the shooting.

“While preliminary evidence points toward a murder-suicide, investigators are conducting a thorough forensic review to finalize the sequence of events,” a BCSO spokesperson said Tuesday.

The sheriff’s office said its investigation is ongoing.
